Vision Centre is a concept, for prevention and treatment of potentially blinding eye diseases through primary health care (PHC). It includes the identification, with treatment or referral, of individuals with treatable causes of blindness; and the diagnosis and treatment of common eye diseases. The principle behind Vision Centre is fair distribution; community involvement; focus on prevention; appropriate technology; multi-sectorial approach.
Vision centre should ideally have 3 staff. It includes a paramedical staff, non clinical staff and a community worker.
Paramedical staff basically trained as a refractionist who performs refraction, takes care of medication, slit lamp, counsel the patient about the importance of the problem. The same person may be additionally trained for optical dispensing.
Non clinical staff he takes care of patient flow, does computer operation, maintains statistics, and prescribes glass and maintains information.
Community worker he trains volunteers who does field work. He is involved in networking with leaders and schools. He is engaged in surveillance and does enumeration. The volunteers are trained to do preliminary vision check. He should also coordinate with other vision centres.
Training is very essential for Vision centre workers. We have provided you with the training schedule for various cadres working in vision centre. This article would benefit the HR team in training the vision centre staff.
