Dear Readers,
Doctor-patient interaction plays a crucial role in the health care delivery. This is often achieved on a one-on-one basis, where each patient interacts individually with the doctor or any health care professional. An alternate way to achieve this is through shared medical appointments (SMA). In shared medical appointments patients with similar chronic health conditions meet the doctor simultaneously, as a small group. While one patient is being examined and prescribed the others in the group get to observe and listen to the doctor patient interactions. SMA have been found be very useful in chronic health conditions like diabetes, obesity, cardiac care, hypertension, and even in chronic eye diseases like glaucoma. SMA can be advantageous in many aspects. Patients’ realization that they are not alone in their difficulties can reduce their anxiety. A desire to conform or excel in a group may spur them to adhere to the doctor's instructions. Thus SMAs for chronic diseases have the potential to serve as a catalyst for patient behaviour change. A shared appointment in effect brings a support group into the doctor’s office.
We are thankful to our librarian Mrs. Kumaragurupari for bringing out collections of web links on various aspects of SMA including the models for SMA, the pros and cons, cost factor, improving client engagement, peer to peer learning, putting SMA into practice, etc. We believe this will be very useful for all those dealing with chronic health care conditions. With warm regards
Dr. S. Kavitha Medical Consultant, Glaucoma Services Aravind Eye Hospital, Pondicherry
